Every drop counts: tips to improve your fuel economy

Every drop counts: tips to improve your fuel economy

A Tough Season For Kiwi Drivers

The conflict around the Strait of Hormuz has rattled global energy supply, and New Zealand hasn’t been spared. Fuel prices have risen noticeably — and for many of us, that means rethinking how we use our vehicles. If you’re looking for practical fuel saving tips for New Zealand drivers, you’re in the right place.

At Cost Effective Maintenance, we work with everyday Kiwi drivers and fleet operators to get the most out of their engines. And right now, more than ever, that’s about fuel economy. Here’s what we know works.

Fuel Saving Tips: Driving Smarter Every Day

Tyre pressure — check it this week
Under-inflated tyres are one of the most common and easiest-to-fix causes of poor fuel economy. The resistance adds up over every kilometre you drive. Check against your door sill or handbook and make it a monthly habit.

Smooth is economical
Aggressive acceleration and late braking both burn significantly more fuel. The smoother you drive, the less your engine has to work. If you’re in city traffic, anticipating lights and traffic flow ahead makes a real difference.

Weight and aerodynamics
Roof racks, trailers, and extra cargo all increase the work your engine has to do. Strip back to what you need. If you’re regularly on the motorway, roof-mounted aerodynamic drag adds up more than people realise.

Rethink the air conditioning
AC is a genuine fuel draw, especially in heavy traffic. Use it when needed, but give it a break on mild days or when you’re in open country where a window works fine.

Air filter — a quick check, a real benefit
A restricted air supply hurts combustion efficiency. Clean or replace your air filter as part of your normal servicing. It’s low cost and keeps your engine breathing properly.

Helping Your Engine Help You

Beyond how you drive, there’s what’s happening under the bonnet. Two products we consistently recommend for fuel economy are FTC Decarboniser and AW10 AntiWear — and they work particularly well together.

FTC Decarbonizer: Cleaner combustion from the inside
Diesel engines naturally accumulate carbon over time — on injector tips, piston crowns, valves, EGR systems, and DPF filters. This carbon is a drag on combustion efficiency: your engine works harder, burns more fuel, and produces more smoke.

FTC is added to your fuel tank before a fill-up. As you drive, it catalyses the combustion process, progressively burning away those deposits. Customers report improved power, reduced smoke, and better economy — all without lifting the bonnet.

AW10 Antiwear: Less friction, more go
Every engine loses some power to internal friction — in the cylinders, gearbox, and drivetrain. AW10 is an anti-friction additive that goes into your engine and transmission oils, reducing that loss.

When friction decreases, your engine recovers power it was previously losing to heat and resistance. Drivers notice smoother operation, quieter running, and better response — and that efficiency translates directly to fuel savings over time.

What Kind Of Savings Can You Expect?

We’re often asked this, and we’ll give you an honest answer.

Based on customer feedback and independent testing of FTC and AW10, fuel savings in the range of 4–10% have been reported — with some customers seeing results toward the higher end, and others a little less. Used together, the two products complement each other: FTC improves combustion efficiency, while AW10 reduces the friction that bleeds off power before it ever reaches the wheels.

The honest caveat: results vary. How much you save depends on your vehicle type, engine condition, how and where you drive, and how consistently you use the products. An older, higher-kilometre diesel engine with significant carbon buildup may respond more noticeably than a newer, well-maintained one. A vehicle doing long highway runs will see different results to one stuck in city traffic all day.

What we can say with confidence is that the savings are real — we’ve seen it consistently across our customers, and the underlying science is well documented. If you’d like to know more about the testing behind these figures, just ask — we’re happy to share the backing material.
